Official Information about the Waybright Microschool

Waybright Academy is a family-based microschool dedicated to providing an inspirational and personalized education for children that want to learn real world skills and love technology. Our custom written curriculum is focused in areas of study such as: Programming & Gaming, Engineering & Robotics, and Animation & Digital Media. Inspiring future thinkers for over fifteen years!

Founded by the Kuhler family with over 15 years of experience, the school operates with a maximum of 10 students, offering 1:1 teaching and individualized learning plans that are rewritten weekly based on each student's progress and interests. Waybright Academy holds Cognia's Accredited with Merit distinction — a nationally recognized accreditation confirming that credits earned here transfer to other accredited schools, colleges, and universities.

The Waybright Academy changed the course of my child's life over three years. The progress observed exceeded expectations. The care, love and expertise provided to my child is beyond what most gifted special needs kids receive in a setting outside the home. Waybright supported my child when other schools, private and public, could not or would not provide needed supports for progress academically and socially.

The level of social and emotional support needed was moderate to high with accompanying needs related to advanced cognitive development. I found that educational programming generally supports students that are advanced or delayed but not both. Programs simply do not exist that robustly address complex developmental profiles that are relatively low in incidence and require labor intensive solutions. The Waybright Director, Diane, experienced this situation with her own children and saw a gap in education services for these students. She created the Waybright program where students with unique developmental profiles can get their needs met and have access to an advanced curriculum.

Waybright accepted me as a parent without the heavy judgement I experienced with other educators and providers. Autism specialist schools misunderstood my child and my parenting. The public school gifted program misunderstood my child and my parenting. The assumption made seemed to be that the advanced reasoning and verbal abilities indicated that behavior was willful and not related to social delays and exceptionally sensitive stress responses. This misinterpretation of behavior in other settings resulted in placing fault for poor intervention outcomes on my parenting or my student's perceived “willful” behavior. This positioning stalls efforts on the part of the educators and acknowledgement of very small but important signs of progress. Waybright understood this situation.

The Waybright Team put human connection, routine, appropriately high expectations and leveraged special interests ahead of behaviorism strategies obsessively used in ABA. This approach made the difference for my child. Behaviorism was used, but sparingly, with transparency, fairly and within a context understandable to my child. On days when my child could not grasp a rule or expectation, we worked on acceptance of things that do not go your way and the ever human and ever enduring presence of disagreement in the school setting and in life. My child is now socially functioning in settings that previously were not accessible and able to move through most un-preferred tasks without a meltdown. It is truly incredible.

Using standardized academic batteries administered by independent evaluators, my child's reading (comprehension and fluency) is now estimated to be 2.5 years advanced in terms of grade level, math calculation is 2 years advanced in terms of grade level. Math problem solving is 2.5 years advanced in terms of grade level. When my child entered Waybright, reading ability was limited to some letter recognition and this underscores the progress I have observed. My child's academic progress was not spontaneous despite the advanced reasoning abilities. My child's writing ability remains delayed. Writing is especially challenging for a lot of twice exceptional students and only now is writing instruction tolerable. How Waybright helped my child achieve this academic success while coping with the social and emotional delays is nothing short of remarkable.

I was expecting my child to excel in the area of science, which is a special interest. The fact that my child is now advanced in math and reading is beyond my expectations. My only long-term goal when my child enrolled was to be able to attend a school day without a meltdown so severe that I had to pick my child up early. We met that goal mid enrollment.

The Waybright staff are wonderful educators developing highly sensitive students into bright and capable humans while meeting their emotional needs, helping them be part of a school community, and challenging them academically. I have so much gratitude.
