Gifted and Twice Exceptional Students
Gifted and twice exceptional students exhibit common behavioral patterns and experience shared problems when it comes to education. Waybright has years of experience with neurodiverse learners and a program that is adaptable and built around the type of learning that excites gifted and twice exceptional learners and the structures that mitigate common schooling pitfalls. Â
We Specialize in Special.
Waybright Academy was born from a mother’s desire for a better education for her own gifted students. Diane Kuhler, Waybright’s owner and a mother to three twice exceptional daughters, envisioned a nurturing environment where her children’s exceptional abilities could flourish; a school that celebrates and understands each child’s intellect, creativity, and individuality, and creates a customized education designed uniquely around them.
With over 15 years of her guidance and experience, Waybright Academy fulfils this dream by offering gifted students an inspirational, innovative, technology-focused and effective model of education, based on real-world skills and evolving curriculum. Every Waybright classroom strives to spark passion in each student, and work directly with gifted and twice-exceptional learners to encourage their exploration of pathways that play to their strengths and foster a lifelong love of learning.
The Gifted Mind
"Most teachers waste their time by asking questions which are intended to discover what a pupil does not know whereas the true art of questioning has for its purpose to discover what the pupil knows or is capable of knowing."
– Albert Einstein

At Waybright
Asynchronous Learners
Gifted and twice exceptional students are often behind or only excelling in focused subjects because they are learning asynchronously. Other gifted schools usually advance them in subjects they already like and school the subjects they're weak in the same way they would for neurotypical students.
Passion-Led
These students are typically driven by their passions and strengths and excel in their favorite subjects. Waybright custom-writes every lesson to bring these student passions and strengths into weaker areas so that gifted students will thrive in subjects they might not have elsewhere.
Bored or Disengaged
Gifted and twice exceptional typically prefer to move through processes in the most optimized and fast-paced way and feel frustrated and disengaged when the task or discussion moves slower than their thoughts and problem solving processes. Because of this, they often struggle with tedious written assignments or collaboration with peers who don't share their background or thought processes.
Adaptable and Eager
At Waybright, students work with experts in their fields to progress through coursework at their own pace. Since they won't always be in specialized environments, Waybright goes beyond other gifted schools and teaches students to adapt tasks to match their individual style. Students who disengage with slower activities or assignments learn to search out tools like speech-to-text to adapt future tasks to be more accessible.
Highly Self-Critical
Gifted students can struggle with self-esteem or perfectionism because they equate success with only highly above-average results and feel pressure to maintain those scores in every subject and every format of assessment. They often don't know how to manage their goals and respond to their weaknesses with a positive mindset.
Guided and Self-Aware
At Waybright we create customized evaluations in the formats that allow each student to shine their brightest. In addition to academic coursework, we teach our students core personal management skills so they know how to discover their own strengths and weaknesses and create the learning environments, goals, and habits that help them thrive.
